Plane: Big Mudda

Span 98"

weight 9.5lbs -12lbs ballasted, Root 13", Tip 6.5", EH 2/10, wing loading 22 oz/ft^2 unballasted

Purpose - Inland sloper/DS plane that will carry more weight and groove better than the CO5. The Co5 would stray into a larger circles as DSing speed increased. After seeing Scott fly his MS I could see this would not be a problem. The design is based on Scotts MS and both planes resemble a 2X Birdworks Zipper.

Fuse - Lost foam method. Kevlar, carbon, glass

Wing - Blue foam cores, rectangular carbon joiner, bagged with uni-carbon, kevlar and glass.

4.8 uni-carbon full length / 10 oz.s-glass root to 18" / 1.4 @ 45 bias veil

Upper wing

4.8 uni-carbon root to 18", uni-carbon root to 36", uni-carbon full length / 1.4 @ 45 bias veil

Also

two layers 1.8 kevlar wrap on LE, 3.2 s-glass @ 45 bias on both sides of elevons, 10 oz s-glass root to 14" (covers joiner and ballast tubes)

Servos

This plane requires some serious servos. I went with the Hitec 615MG run on a five cell (1700mah) pack. This gets the torque up to 130 in-ounces. I have not had any problems so far. 6-7 second punches from a DS wind-up without incident and crisp point rolls show these servos are in control.

Flying

This plane shows none of the high speed elevator stalls that the CO5 demonstrated. The roll rate is really good for a large sloper (1.5 rolls/second), and makes alot of noise doing it! Although it can bang out some sharp turns it prefers to be smoothed around the slope. It really gobbles up the sky by retaining energy well and carrying its weight around easily. Could be classified as a really fast floater on one hand, but a large plane that thnks its small on the other. The potential of this plane is humbling. It is going to take some time to learn to fly to the full potential of this plane. If you float it around it is a sweetheart, but if you turn it loose get ready to commit a good dose of energy to concentration and nerve suppression. The more you try, the more it will do and beg for more. I'll have a plane of this style in the arsenal for a long time.

Update:

Although this plane will DS well it won't get the maximum potential out of the flying site. Banging consecutive turns puts the brakes on the plane and initiates yaw. While still a VERY exciting plane to fly, its not the DS wing I was looking for.
